Traditionally, organizations have implemented a slow-by-default deployment pipeline dominated by manual checks and approvals, with an exceptional process to expedite changes when there’s an urgent need. The problem with this approach is that the rarely-used expedited channel increases instability, because the usual checks were skipped to create a slimmed-down path to production. Most production issues and regressions result from an expedited change in this setup.
